0.1 antisocial

the last time sian had a blog, everything was linked up with the socials. sian was an early adopter of this: facebook, twitter, flickr, even plurk (plurk is a weird one, being an also-ran twitter competitor from the far east that’s literally only used west of singapore by people in secondlife, but which is also, weirdly, used by secondlife residents really religiously and actively, and with the same sometimes toxic intensity as any of the other web 2.0 hellsites).

this time round, to say that sian had no desire to use any of them would be somewhat of a euphemism. the meatspace counterpart sian tolerates has to use facebook and twitter for the sake of their livelihood, and managing another entire self representation when they’re already having to present a functionally fraudulent one anyway would just be exhausting.

besides, people might read the blog. which, we suppose, is a disingenuous thing to say, but sian never anticipated, this time around, that people might be reading this beyond a few of sian’s friends. all of which goes to explain how a good-natured, sensitive and very positive write-up on one of the well-more read secondlife news blogs (following a twitter share that had in fact been oked with sian) might have inspired, to sian’s own surprise, a low key feeling of panic. the sense that they are back on the radar – and knowing that there are some radars they wish to avoid – is not entirely pleasant.

it was a good write-up, though. the writer understood the point of this blog, and why there are no links to socials here, which inspires some degree of hope, even if, as sian knew would happen, there was going to be a mild callout for violating secondlife fashion blog protocol (if you’re reading this, cajsa, please don’t take this as critique – sian was also genuinely flattered and charmed by the attention. it’s not a zero sum game).

the lack of links to any other social content here is defensive and bilateral. sian understands that this isn’t how the internet is supposed to work, and perhaps it’s at best wishful thinking to try this. but the idea is that this is all you get of sian on the one hand, and on the other sian gets to have a blog and the satisfaction of having made something without knowing who is reading, beyond a number next to each post on the blog dashboard. think of sian as a hot trans avatar falling over in the middle of a forest with no one to hear. it may be inevitable that the breadcrumbs are followed and sian gets linked up too many times. if this blog vanishes without a trace, you’ll know why.
