when the flesh individual behind sian realised they were a they, it was a surprise only to them. one friend, a true early adopter, had been using they/them for sian reflexively since about 2013. most of the other people to whom sian came out were confused that this was somehow news. in embracing a transidentity, sian began finally to come to terms with where they stand on transhumanism, of which there are two varieties.
one is a paywall-blocked attempt at finally turning the class divide into a species divide, ruled by kleptocratic ai overlords, as espoused by the sort of silver spoon sucking straights who think that they are clever because they take roko’s basilisk seriously.
the other may perhaps be less likely, but it is the good sort nonetheless, allowing for the democratisation of human identity, the switching up of bodies, the abolition of concrete gender, the transcendence of disability. it has been the way of science fiction to consider this unrealistic: algernon’s flowers are always deemed to be ephemeral. perhaps it is, but that is no reason not to work for it: world religions and political movements have worked to unrealistic goals for thousands of years, after all.
it’s all too complex to summarise here, though, so in the end, sian simply settles with referring to themself as transeverything. they hope you are ok with that.
