1.3 third person

it has been noted by more than a few people in and out of second life that sian’s player refers to sian in the third person. they sometimes hold conversations with sian, and hold different ideological and religious views – sian is an atheist, for example, while their meatspace analogue is not.

someone asked the player yesterday if they had considered that they and sian might be a dissociative identity disorder system; they then held a conversation with sian, as if it were the most natural thing in the world. and the player let sian take over. were they acting? pretending? were they just being extra? was something else in place? has the liberal use of posthypnotic triggers that bring out the sian persona over the last decade had some permanent effect? neither sian nor their player knows. they have always been dissociative – they did not know what it was called, but it turns out it’s dissociation – and d.i.d. isn’t a thing you contract or develop. the psychiatric orthodoxy is that it comes when you are a kid, although you might not recognise it as that for a long time. so sian honestly doesn’t know what they are. or what their flesh counterpart is either. and neither of them knows how not to be anxious about it.
