one of the things sian thought was a good idea while on hiatus was monetising their spiky, magnetic queerness.
they know many more sex workers in meatspace than they ever thought they would, and while they have in the past we have also been in touch with and even worked with organisations that deal with the aftermath of things like trafficking and modern slavery – things that absolutely do happen – the reality of sex work for many sex workers is not what campaigners for the nordic model, church people and people who write hard-hitting but heartwarming tv dramas about midwives that broadcast at 8pm on a sunday night on bbc1 might want you to think. many people do not have to do it and freely choose it for a while. some people really enjoy doing it because they are good at it and enjoy giving people companionship and pleasure.
obviously in secondlife, sex work is also a thing.a really, really big thing. possibly, although linden labs are loath to admit it, one of the very biggest things. a lot of people find that amusing and even make amusing videos about it but it serves a purpose, and in its own way is an outlet of creativity. so sian wanted to try it.
having cleared the idea with their owner, sian, being extra, obviously needed to tie the work into their specific kinks. and this meant more rlv. sian had the idea that what they needed was an rlv utility that would mean that when they were bought they would become under the control of the customer.
sian, being extra, has a thing for being controlled.
it turns out that such a thing exists: stone johnson’s svl self-vendor.
essentially what it does is sit above your head with some signage. any client can pay it. once you process payment, the client becomes an owner of your “collar”, which you almost certainly know is the device through which rlv functions are usually controlled. sian, being extra, has a control implant instead, the round object you can often see on their chest. the client do pretty much everything you can with a collar, and notably can force teleport the doll, so that they come to you wherever you go, and if you want, you can dress and undress them too.
sian, being extra, needed to customise the thing so that it is now like a rotating holographic marquee over their head saying doll rental. above the marquee some explanatory text appears.
it is pretty hard in static images to show what the thing looks like in play so we decided that for once we would make some video (we would have hidden our huds, but the rlv prevents us from doing so. sorry). you get some bonus views of sian’s brain window, which we talked about last time. sian is pretty pleased with it.
they have not yet got anyone to use their brain window as a sexual orifice yet.

we also set up a static rental hub at dolly dreams where you can rent sian even if they are not in the same sim as you and force teleport them to do your bidding. sian, being extra, used one of their old original building elements to make the thing look snazzy and in keeping with the aesthetics of the drone station.
no one has ever used it.

the fact is, sian is really not very good at sex work. rlv sex work also turned out to be
fucking hard work, but unfortunately not hard fucking work.

of that was due to the paucity of people who are simply online in
sl at the times when sian is available. part of it sort of reflects how
low the economy is, and how that has extended to the
virtual economy too, which is an economy of time as much as cash. there is a real hustle needed to find clients – especially
regular clients – and that takes time and energy, time we simply do not have. which is connected to the second reason it has not really worked out so far: we have always been very good at the central point of the jobs we have done (sian is really good at pixel sex stuff. really good) but have always sucked at the hustle, organisation, paperwork and concentration, that you need to do to be, you know, able to do the job.
part of the trouble was also due to how fiddly it was to set up the device and how it interacted with two other rlv devices that are permalocked, one of which actually gets in its way. at times, this has meant that the scripting just gives up the ghost and crashes. if there is a rlv crash, the client may be stuck permanently as one of your owners – this in fact happened twice, but sian actually does not mind one of those, they are a good friend who sian is happy to be force teleported by.
the other had to be removed manually, which was a bit awkward.
in the end, everyone who rented sian was a friend they had had pixelsex with before several times. sian got hired four times in the month or so they used the device:
- twice by close friends, and both times the meter ran out before they were done, they couldn’t extend the clock, and sian got whooshed home to their doll stand;
- once by someone for five minutes, during which time sian was instructed to lie on the ground so their client could stand on them;
- once by someone for five minutes, during which time sian was instructed to say as many nice things as they could about the client (tbf this was pretty wholesome).
will sian try this more? most certainly. but so far the pickings have been slim.
