the concept of “passing” in trans circles has extreme ambivalence attached to it.
everyone wants to, but at the same time, it does not feel as right as it might do. if you can go out of the door as a trans woman and people will assume you are a woman, it is goals, it is perfection, the thing we dream of, but there is also the sense that no one is liberated until we all are, and so it is not uncommon to find that those of us who pass the most easily are often the ones who are most open about their status as trans.
we are thinking about this a lot right now. rl!sian tried on a dress today, and she didn’t look bad in it, but there’s something about her that knows she won’t be passing any time soon, maybe not ever, and how she is going to have to find a way forward. she starts hormones tomorrow (6th july 2024). and surgery will follow. this is the real deal.
in secondlife, you can pass. you can have your ideal body. hell, why would you even say you are trans? except sian does. honestly, part of it is a sort of honour system. sian is a bit of a slut and does not want to do the thing with a transphobe, so it is all up front. but also, it is about being honest. being true to herself. it is easy to make an avatar that is a woman (honestly much easier than it is to make a convincing man in secondlife, but that is another issue) but making an avatar that bears the signifiers of being a woman intentionally through surgery and hormones, that is quite something else.
