the patches were only ever going to be a temporary solution; the real deal was always going to be doing it by injection. and as of the end of august, every sunday, sian swabs down a patch of skin on her abdomen, swabs down a tiny bottle, and sticks a tiny needle in herself with a dose of hormones.
please do not judge, but: sian is self-medicating. she is too old and has been waiting too long to muck about any longer.
the biggest surprise was to find that a year’s supply of injectable estradiol comes to a grand total – and this includes a year’s supply of insulin needles, alcohol wipes and a sharps bin – of about £70 sterling. but then this is the case generally with prescription medications: they’re much, much cheaper than we think they are. even english prescription charges, which americans tend to think are comically low, are much more than the cost of nearly all the medications currently licensed for prescription. the patches felt real, but this – this feels real. this feels like something is happening.
