specifically, she won the recognition of her right to nearly two years of backpaid disability benefits and further monthly payments for the next three years. to maintain this right she has had to fight for well over a year now to keep the label “severely impaired” and further won herself a further one, “significantly limited”, which she must tattoo onto her identity, lest it be taken away, and the support of the state with it.
oh yeah, that really fucking feels like winning.
the reason that we prefer the term “disabled” is due to the fact that the inherent things that limit us only create difficulties for us because society does not accommodate for us on a baseline, conceptual level. this is not about giving a ramp for people with wheelchairs or holding sensory-light evenings at the supermarket. in fact, those sorts of accommodations are never going to be enough, because they are extra, because they are crumbs thrown to us, because they are often acts of grudging compliance with inadequately formed inclusivity laws. sure, it is better than not having them, but the only equitable society is one which didn’t need those sorts of modifications in the first place. one that didn’t depend on nine to five structures of time, that didn’t base our identity on some external idea of productivity.
if you are neurotypical, if you are physically abled, you are complicit in creating a society that disables people for your convenience. we have neurological or physical conditions, sure, but the thing that really makes them limited for us is the fact of a world that makes you comfortable.
