sian’s flickr got deactivated for having “adult content” this week. so it is gone. there weren’t even any nipples there. everything lewd was covered. it did not matter. rather than try to engage in five dimensional chess and work out what got the account nuked, sian just took it all down.
here is a thought experiment. imagine that you put the way in which you conceive of your gender and sexuality in two imaginary boxes: a box labelled sfw and a box that is labelled nsfw.
in the sfw box, put the things that you imagine we could publicly tell an imaginary work colleague about our gender and sexuality. in the nsfw box, put the things you should keep for people over 18, in private spaces.
now here is the thing: imagine how the people around you do it for themselves. and now imagine how they do it for you. if you are queer, those things are different to the equivalent things for straight and cisgendered people.
consider, the next time a straight work colleague shares their honeymoon photos or talks about their spouse, try saying “it is so brave how open you are about your sexuality, but love is love, isn’t it?” or if you are feeling a bit more combative, “don’t you think it is a little inappropriate for people like you to thrust your sexuality in everyone’s faces like that?” and then bathe in the bafflement.
but the simple fact that there are forces today who think that the simple fact of being trans or gay is pornographic, that a man kissing a man, a woman kissing a woman, or a trans woman even daring to go out in a dress, is palpable.
sian admits: she is beginning to get a bit heterophobic in her old age. can one blame her?
